Ces images sont extraites du « Recueil de divers oiseaux étrangers et peu connus trouvés dans les ouvrages de MM. Edwards et Catesby, représentés en gravure et colorés avec précision » de Johann Michael Seligmann, publié en neuf volumes entre 1768 et 1776. Mark Catesby (1683-1749) a commencé à publier en 1731 son Histoire naturelle de la Caroline, de la Floride et des îles Bahamas, qui comprend 220 planches d'animaux et de plantes. George Edwards (1694-1773), connu comme le « père de l'ornithologie britannique », a publié A Natural History of Uncommon Birds à partir de 1743, avec 317 gravures colorées à la main. Profitant de leur succès, Seligmann, un marchand d'art de Nuremberg, a regravé et recoloré les planches, ajoutant des textes en allemand, puis en français et en néerlandais.
These images are from 'Collection of Various Foreign and Little-Known Birds Found in the Works of Messrs Edwards and Catesby, Depicted in Engraving and Accurately Coloured' by Johann Michael Seligmann, published in nine volumes between 1768 and 1776. Mark Catesby (1683–1749) began publishing his Natural History of Carolina, Florida and the Bahama Islands in 1731, featuring 220 plates of animals and plants. George Edwards (1694–1773), known as the 'father of British ornithology,' published A Natural History of Uncommon Birds from 1743, with 317 hand-coloured etchings. Capitalising on their success, Seligmann, an art dealer from Nuremberg, re-engraved and re-coloured the plates, adding text in German, later also in French and Dutch.
