Thibaut Kinder collectionne, depuis 2014, des cartes SD trouvées sur des marchés de biffins, sur internet ou dans des magasins de matériel électronique d’occasion pour son projet Exhumed photographs. Le passage au numérique et les capacités de stockage offertes par la carte Secure Digital ont transformé notre façon de prendre des photos, en faisant notamment de chacun d’entre nous des apprentis photographes – plus ou moins compulsifs. Ces cartes SD, adaptées à la multitude d’appareils qui nous entourent deviennent des réceptacles à vocations multiples. Sébastien Leseigneur les qualifie de « data fourre-tout idéal », sur lequel on a tendance à oublier ce qu’on y dépose. Mais, à l’instar de chaque mot publié sur Internet, chaque email envoyé, nos moindres faits et gestes digitaux sont archivés, conservés bon gré mal gré et ce, au-delà de toute suppression. Après un passage dans un logiciel de récupération de données, les cartes abandonnées révèlent rapidement et simplement leurs données, supprimées mais pas effacées. Thibaut Kinder a ainsi amassé près de 180 000 photos à ce jour. Exhumer ces photographies pose la question de la survivance de la mémoire – des mémoires. En présentant des clichés rigoureusement isolés puis réordonnés au préalable, sur Instagram ou Tumblr, clichés initialement condamnés à l’oubli, Thibaut Kinder leur offre un prolongement inattendu et un tout nouveau sens.
An Egyptian Story réunit des photographies sélectionnées parmi quelques 14 640 clichés. Le prétexte d’une publication sous la forme d’un livre permet d’opposer au flux continuel des réseaux sociaux un autre rythme, que chacun peut s’approprier à la consultation de l’ouvrage. Si elles proviennent de 14 cartes SD différentes, les photographies sont en effet ici agencées de manière à proposer une narration plus articulée. Thibaut Kinder y révèle au monde, toujours avec pudeur, des bribes de vies inconnues, vocabulaire qu’il utilise pour nous conter une nouvelle histoire énigmatique.

In 2014 Thibaut Kinder began collecting memory cards found in flea markets, on the Internet or in second-hand electronics stores for his project "Exhumed photographs". The arrival of digital processing and the increased storage capacity offered by memory cards like Secure Digital (SD) has transformed our way of taking pictures, making each us into apprentice photographers and more or less compulsive in our picture taking. These SD cards have been adapted to work with the multitude of devices that surround us and have become multi-purpose receptacles. Sébastien Leseigneur* considers them to be the “ideal data holdalls” in which we have a tendency to forget what we’ve stored. At the same time, like each word published on the Internet, each email sent, the smallest of our digital actions and gestures are archived and stockpiled willy- nilly and will stay that way, impervious to any possible erasure. After they have been passed through the proper software, the abandoned cards quickly and simply reveal their contents, deleted but not erased. In this way, Thibaut Kinder has collected some 180,000 photographs to date. Exhuming photographs brings up questions of survival and memory or rather memories. By presenting these meticulously isolated and organised photos on Instagram or Tumblr – images that had normally been assigned to oblivion – Thibaut Kinder offers them an unexpected vital prolongation and whole new meanings.
An Egyptian Story brings together photographs chosen from among 14,640 shots. The pretext for a publication in the form of a bound edition makes it possible to oppose the continuous ux of social networks with another rhythm, one that each person can appropriate through their perusal of the work. Though they are drawn from 14 different SD cards, the photographs are in effect presented together in order to advance an alternative narrative. With respectful modesty, Thibaut Kinder reveals a world through ashes of the unknown lives he has discovered and, through the vocabulary he uses to share a new and enigmatic story with us.
