Prométhée ou le Poème du Feu, opus number 60 of Alexandre Scriabine, was composed between 1908 and 1910. Inhabiting a space between symphonic poem and a post-romantic piano concerto, it is a cornerstone of musical modernity. The score, written for a large orchestra, piano and mixed choir, contains the distinguishing feature of a stave (set above those for all the other instruments) labelled 'Luce' (light), to be played by a piano whose keys, rather than emit notes, project colours. It is the first-ever light show. Taking his inspiration from the light spectrum, Scriabine had established a scheme of relations between sounds and colours that was consistent with his synaesthetic experiences and with the cycle of fifths. In this piece, Jean-Christophe Roelens proposes colourful writing of the work by attempting to be faithful to the composer's vision of correspondences between notes and colours.
