This book offers a humorous and offbeat tour of France through a collection of vintage and unusual postcards from our provinces.Using collages and selections of postcards, the author plays on the names of French villages, which are sometimes comical, suggestive, or unexpected.A blend of wordplay, witticisms, mischief, and visual nods that subvert or highlight the kitschy, folksy charm of a certain France—whether rural or urban.Jean-Marie Donat is a French artist-iconographer, publisher, and collector.Since the 1980s, he has been building a vast collection of over 40,000 photographs (prints, Ektachromes, negatives), postcards, and magazines spanning nearly a century of visual history (from 1880 to 1990).His collection consists mainly of anonymous images, amateur photographs, and images from popular archives. Through the assemblage, juxtaposition, and montage of these archives, he seeks to offer a critical, poetic, or offbeat interpretation of 20th-century history.
